# FOM Assignment 1

Hello Fommies!

For your first assignment, I would like you to complete the following tasks:

Problem 1.  Set up your own FOM Blog!  You simply need to go to http://www.wordpress.com and sign up!  The process should be as simple as setting up an e-mail account, and you do not need to use any identifying information (in setting up your blog or in naming it, signing posts, etc.).  In fact, all you have to do is e-mail me a link to your blog, your blog name, and your name.  To finish this problem, also post something!  Be sure to mention something math-related and/or class-related, but feel free to talk about other things, too! (This problem is due Tuesday!)

Problem 2.  Read Sections 1.1-1.7 and 1.9  (you can read 1.8 if you like, but don’t worry too much if the notation is confusing).  Most of this reading should seem very familiar to our recent class discussions, but there are a few ideas and words mentioned in here that we did not cover, so be on the look out for terms like “complement, difference, cardinality” and others.  The problems we will be tackling this week will focus on sections 1.1-1.5, but its probably a good idea to read ahead through sections 1.6, 1.7, and 1.9, too.  After you’re done reading these sections, write down one thing you read that you found especially clear or helpful.

Problem 3.  Use interval notation to write down the set $S = \{ x \in \mathbb{R} : 7 < x \leq 10\}$.

Problem 4.  Is it true that the intersection of any two open intervals of real numbers is, again, an open interval?  Explain why or why not (a picture might help.)

Problem 5.  Complete problems 29 and 34 for Section 1.1

Problem 6.  Complete problems 1(a), 1(f), and 1(h) for Section 1.2, as well as problem 15 for Section 1.2

Problem 7  Complete problems 2, 3, 4, and 9 for Section 1.3

Problem 8.  Complete problems 7 and 8 for Section 1.4

Problem 9.  Complete problems 1(a), 2(b), 3(c ), and 4(d) for Section 1.5

Problem 10.  Write down one question from your studies in this class so far that you are absolutely want answered in class.
